Pushing Boundaries To Preserve Our Planet and Improve Lives

Through the pioneering use of AI, advanced technology, and analytics, we combat illegal fishing and help rejuvenate our oceans, fulfilling the vision of our founder Paul G. Allen, the late philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder.

A Commitment To Developing AI for the Common Good

Skylight is based at the Allen Institute for AI (AI2), a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking AI research and engineering in service of the common good. Skylight and the fight against illegal fishing benefit from the institute’s world-class expertise in AI.

Our Mission

Bridging the Data Gap in Marine Conservation

For most countries, vast ocean sizes overwhelm resources for monitoring illegal fishing and maritime crimes. Recognizing the critical role of enforcement, Skylight addresses this gap by leveraging AI and big data, providing free, operationally relevant, and high-quality insights for under-resourced states and marine protected areas.

Our Family

Skylight is one of several zero-revenue AI for the environment programs available through the Allen Institute for AI (AI2). Skylight, along with EarthRanger and Satlas, is available under the “AI for the Environment” umbrella at AI2.
EarthRanger
EarthRanger is a software solution that aids protected users in making more informed operational decisions for wildlife conservation. EarthRanger collects, integrates, and displays all historical and available data and combines it with reports from the field to provide one unified view of collared wildlife, rangers, enforcement assets, and infrastructure within a protected area.

Satlas
Satlas combines the power of modern AI with the scale of public-domain satellite imagery to provide monthly monitoring of the planet. We leverage the latest advances in AI to robustly process images in this challenging domain and produce various geospatial data products that we make freely available. These products are high-accuracy, global, and updated monthly.

Climate Modeling
The goal of AI2’s climate modeling team is to improve the world’s understanding of climate change, its effects, and what can be done now. Better data and technologies will inform how we mitigate and adapt to global impacts, such as sea level rise, community destruction, and biodiversity loss.

Wildlands
AI2’s team of machine learning researchers, engineers, and designers are working together to apply machine learning to support wildland fire management and research workflows. By focusing efforts on ground-level fuels that are not measurable with current satellite technology, the team is improving the health and resilience of our forests.
